Encourage Farmers and Citizens to Build Small Ponds/Lakes and Plant Trees!
Anything that blocks the natural flow of the water is, in general, bad. There's a reason this culture accorded the highest possible status of being a deity to our rivers knowing they (rivers) have their own intelligence, but dams (including those Check Dams) have been ravaging soil for years now and hopefully we will begin to realize what may benefit us in the short term may end up taking our lives.
Here's why we are against dams:
When a dam is constructed, it (reservoir + river) can hold a lot more water and the large body of running water starts digging through soil and rock causing groundwater to move to this artificial "incisions", in turn, causing severe damage to water table levels in floodplains.
This loss of organic matter from the soil and depleting water table levels because of "river incisions" caused through "intense hydraulic energy" is something that largely gets ignored. If you consider other damages (the ones much talked about in the media) like loss of lives and floodplains, you'd definitely wonder whether we gave any thought before constructing these dams.
The solution has been hiding in plain sight: Encourage farmers and citizens to build small ponds/lakes and plant trees wherever you find space.
